Shell Gas & Power International BV signed a coal gasification and gas treatment license contract with Korea Western Power Co. Ltd (KOWEPO), a state-owned power utility company in the Republic of Korea.

The contract sees Shell selling the licenses of the Shell Coal Gasification Process (SCGP) and the Shell-Paques Gas Treating Technology (SGTT) and related technical support services.
The agreement entitles KOWEPCO to use the technologies in the design, construction and operation of South Korea’s first ever Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant, Taean IGCC No. 1.
KOWEPO’s Taean IGCC No. 1 plant will be built at the Taean Thermal Power Generation site on the west coast of the Korean peninsular around 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Seoul. Start up for the plant is due by 2014.
Taean IGCC No. 1 will be converting around 2,600 tons (2,360 tonnes) per day of coal into power. The plant’s design will see it having an overall efficiency of more than 42 percent on a high heating value basis.
KOWEPO as the plant owner will also act as operator and Doosan Heavy Industries will be the front-end engineering, design, procurement and construction contractor for the gasification and gas treating plants within the Taean IGCC No. 1 power plant.
